I'll be honest with you.
I didn't have high expectations for the book. Really, I chose it simply because I liked the cover (#coverlove). I mean, with Instagram-worthy photographs smothering the page, who wouldn't? After reading the introduction and part of the first chapter, I was pretty sure that my assumption was right: this book was nothing more than a pretty cover on the outside and shallow words on the inside.
Oh shoot.
I was so wrong.
John Luke Robertson has an amazing way with words. Seriously, who would've expected that from the son of a duck hunter? He executes this "story" with precision, John Luke knows what he wants to communicate to his readers and he communicates it with the typical Robertson humor that all Duck Dynasty fans will recognize.
Earlier, I called Young and Beardless a story. And, in the overall scheme of things, it is a story. But not only that, it's a guidebook on how to dream big, love strong, and live a meaningful life for Christ. Through the course of the book, John Luke tells family stories and shares sweet childhood memories. He ties those to thoughts and truths about living the ultimate life for Christ.
Three chapters into the book I realized something very important: there was no way I would finish the book without a highlighter. So, instead of carrying a book around with me, I was that girl with a book and a jumbo yellow marker. I'm also certain that no one will want to read my copy of Young and Beardless, the pages went from cream-colored to a solid yellow.
So many Biblical truths were packed into the book. If you're looking for encouragement and/or a good laugh, this book is one that you're gonna want on your bookshelf. And you won't want it to get dusty.
I look forward to many more spunk-filled, humor-injected, faith-building books to come from the pen and paper of John Luke Robertson. And, after reading Young and Beardless, you'll feel the same way.
